"Mimus squinted longingly at the pastry. "What of my reward?"

Theodo shook his head. "You'll have to work harder. The night is still young."

"How unjust!" pouted Mimus. "This little good-for-nothing crams his belly and I have to watch. Just wait, you rascal!" He brandished his bauble threateningly. "You'll pay for this!"

He dragged Florin behind the pillar by his ass's ears. "You could have done worse," he whispered, "far worse." For one brief moment his face relaxed. "Take a rest," he said with a smile, winding a rag around his injured thumb. "Chief Justice Bernado is about to attend a trial he won't forget as long as he lives."

Screwing up his eyes, he stared fixedly at a corpulent, exceptionally well-dressed man at the lower end of the king's table. Even as he did so, the face beneath his fool's cap transformed itself into a mask: watchful and malevolent, with glittering gaze and mouth turned down at the corners in scorn. He looked just as he had that first night, when Florin learnt to hate him."
